You are planning to send a file or folder to your friends via e-mail but the file you want to send contain very large size.
… then you are trying to reduce the file size by compressing it using WinRar.
Does it work properly? Is it effective enough?
Do you think that when you compress the file using WinRar, it will make the size 50% smaller than its original size?
The answer could be yes, could be no.
It depends on the files type.
Notes: Please keep in mind that not every file can be highly compressed. Only raw files/uncompressed ones can be highly compressed.
Estimation on Compression Percentage
WinRar allows you to estimate the time and the amount of compression before you do it.
Before compressing the files or folder, you can check the estimation in advance to find the file size from the compressed results using WinRar.
Step by Step to Estimate Time and Compression Percentage
Open WinRar and choose the selected files to be compressed
Click on Info and click ‘Estimate‘ button
There will be a pop-up window that displays the percentage of files to be compressed along with the duration for compression process.
From several compression I have done to my files and folder, I can conclude that the compressed file would stay at 90% from its original file. In other word, it decreased for 10% only.
Best Compression Settings in Winrar
After conducting several experiments using WinRar compress files by changing the parameter setting of WinRar. ..
Finally I found out the best WinRar settings to get the highest compression result, as follows:
Right click on files/folder and select Add to Archive
Archive Format: RAR
Compression Method: Best
Dictionary size: Select the biggest one
Check the “Create solid archive” box
Click the Advanced tab and then the Compression button. Set “Text compression” to “Auto”.
By using the above setting, the average size of the compressed file is reduced by 10%.
Split File for Smaller Size
There is another alternative to split files into some smaller parts…
By this means you can send/upload file with huge size
Suppose your file is 1 GB,
If you just compress it using WinRar, the compressed file will result at 900 MB..
Since the file size can make your uploading process takes much time, especially when the internet connection is not stable, it may get interrupted in the middle of the process and you must repeat to upload from the beginning.
Therefore, by dividing the file into 10 sections with each measuring about 100 MB.
